In the military I was (literally) trained to wear a pair of poly socks under a pair of wool blend socks whenever in Battle Dress Uniform (most of the time). I learned the superiority of the system, and have maintained it for years since. The poly base layer quickly wicks water, while the wool sock provides reliable insulation and durable cushioning. The multiple layers of distinct materials reduces shearing forces that can cause blisters. I’ve walked many miles with a heavy load wearing socks like this, and I wouldn’t do it another way.I ordered 10 identical pairs of poly base layer socks at the same time I ordered 10 pairs of these, but for some reason the first batch of these had some cryptic problem, were returned to sender, and I was refunded. I still wanted these socks though, so I ordered them again, and second time around they arrived.I wanted these particular socks because 1) I want to have no difficulty making pairs, and these are identical in pattern and color. 2) The high wool content. 3) The low price per pair (something like $2.40/pair). The poly socks for my base layer were something like $1.60/pair, making these seem a much better bargain.I wear a 10 men’s normal width in combat boots. These fit well, snug but not constricting. I wore them for 24 hours without base layer just so I could get a good idea of their nature. The fabric was comfortable (I could tell there was significant wool involved, with hints of itchiness , but such trivial discomforts do not register unless I’m really checking for them). They are very warm (not ideal in our summer temperatures, but it did give me a chance to evaluate how they deal with sweat); they remain warm when wet, wick well, and don’t get stinky nearly as quick as cotton. I tried them with the poly base layer socks I bought and am pleased with the net result.They are perhaps thinner than I was hoping for (winter is coming to northern Michigan) but I’m quite sure these will be adequate for shoveling snow. I would not object to them being longer. I did see thicker and longer socks, but not near this price point.In conclusion I carefully selected these based on price and perceived value, and am pleased with my choice. A winter of having warm dry feet and not wasting time making pairs seems very appealing.

The socks are nice, but beware that they do run smaller than other socks. I’m a women who wears a size 9.5 in women’s, sometimes size 10, depending on if the shoe runs small. In men’s sizes I’m most comfortable in a size men’s 8.5. With that in mind, the LARGE fit me just right, and are snug, as a wool sock should be. I can’t imagine the sock fitting a men’s size 13 without stretching too thin and not a proper fit. The socks are a medium weight, but the past few years that’s all I receive on Amazon even when stating “thick” socks. They’re plenty warm enough for So Cal, but I can’t speak for wear in snowy areas. And, wool, if truly 70%, is good all year round. I have sensitive skin at times and the socks did not bother my skin. The box is okay for gift giving, kind of generic. The individual paper bands on each pair only state wool socks, not the content amounts of each (70% merino wool, 23% polyester, 5% spandex, 2% nylon) as in the description. I’ve included pics of the front and back bands – care instructions on back. They feel soft and comfortable, but there are some strings only on top near the bands of colors (if you buy solid colors, you might not have this). The foot of the bed is a terry, which is good for breathability and absorbing foot moisture. I did receive one pair where the design was off a little (see pic). These socks are good for personal use, for me. As far as if good enough to gift to someone, that decision is yours! I hope my review helped someone make a choice! Other reviews helped me, too!
